LEAD-China holds the 6th "Leadership in Sustainable Development Training Course"

(Beijing, 16 -- 22 May, 2005)

LEAD (acronym for Leadership for Environment and Development,LEAD project in China is called LEAD-China) headquarters is located in the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London . The Imperial College aims at cultivating middle aged and young leaders who are interested in both economic development and environment protection. LEAD conducts "leadership in sustainable development" training course and recruits associates in over 60 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America. It currently has over 1000 fellows and associates.

In order to meet the demands of young people who are interested in sustainable development, LEAD-China office will holds the 6th "Leadership in Sustainable Development Training Course" on May 16th of 2005. The training will last for 7 days from the May 16th to 22th.

The participatory training course will provide discussion and exchange opportunities for the participants through group exercise, special topic discussion, and capacity building. The main theme of of this training course will be "Ecosystem Approach to Health". Well known Chinese experts from the sustainable development field will be invited to the training course to discuss the challenge that China faces and the corresponding strategies.

After all the requirements are met, LEAD-China will award each associate a diploma signed by Mr. Qu Geping (the chairman of the board of director of LEAD-China).

Deadline of applications: May 15th, 2005

Cost of training:

  • RMB 2000 (includes room and board during training).
  • RMB 1500 (not includes room and board during training).

Qualification:

Anyone who is interested in sustainable development and has a BA or BS degree or equivalent.

1. Objectives

By now, the associates have been exposed to different perspectives of sustainable development - demography, ecology, economics, energy, environment science and systems approach. This session will continue to facilitate the accomplishment of LEAD learning objectives - vision development, skills building and sustainable development practice with varieties of exercises going throughout the process. The session will pick “Ecosystem Approach to Health” as the theme, around which the learning is conducted. It is designed for Associates:

  • To have a better understanding of sustainable development in disciplinary perspectives, and to transcend the conventional disciplinary boundaries using Nujiang river dam construction as a case;

  • To build the skills of systems thinking and cross culture as the integrated approaches to complex sustainable development issues;

  • Taking “Ecosystem Approach to Health” as a theme, to understand the implications of “Ecosystem Approach to Health”, its meaning to sustainable development and the challenges faced in China by dialoguing and communicating with the experts in the field;

  • To finalize the proposal of associates project related to the sustainable development issues and work out the action plan.

Meanwhile, in the last two days of the sesion, we will have a seminar to select 15 qualified international associates.

3. Methodology

The workshop will take the interactive and participatory approach. Working groups is a basic format of participation, complemented by presentation in plenary. Role-play games will be used to further encourage the participation and facilitate the understanding process.
