1. The goals of the LEAD Program

A principal challenge facing decision makers in all countries is the promulgation of policies for both environment and development that improve the quality of life for their people. Such policies will transcend traditional boundaries - those between disciplines, nationalities, cultures, and generations - and will require innovative thought and sensitive, creative management for their development and implementation.

The Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) Program is designed to stimulate this thinking, expand management options and foster communication between the wide range of professionals involved in addressing development and environment problems. LEAD Associates will embark upon a one-year directed course of study while remaining in their usual employment.

2. Overview of LEAD curriculum

The LEAD curriculum is designed to achieve three objectives:

  1. Building a new vision of the world with a broad and systemic understanding of current socio-economic and environment dilemmas confronting the world to explore a new development path toward greater sustainability.

  2. Developing and reinforcing the capacity and skills for leadership and decision-making, that are sensitive to the signals or voices of different stakeholders especially those from disadvantaged groups, encourage their participation in decision making so that their long-term interests get protected, and are able to implement the decisions made in a participatory approach by overcoming obstacles built in the conventional institutional arrangement.

  3. Creating a global LEAD network of individuals including LEAD fellows and institutions, which facilitates the exchanges, learning and supporting each other in the premise of the sustainable development.

This curriculum is accomplished in 13 months, through 4 national training sessions, including one distant learning, and 2 international training sessions (see LEAD Brochure for details).

3. The objectives of the first national training session

This is an orientation session - understanding LEAD and sustainable development. The session aims to enable Associates

  • To understand LEAD as an open, transparent learning platform where they communicate differences, explore the challenges and search solutions toward a society with greater sustainability so that they can decide whether they will commit their time and energy to this program.
  • To be exposed to various disciplinary perspectives of the sustainable development, economic, environment, ecological, demographic, energy and social - as stimuli so as to encourage a cross-disciplinary debate toward a new vision development.
  • To begin building and revisiting the leadership skills with which to encourage participation of all stakeholders, overcome obstacles and implement the sustainable development strategies.
  • To build learning teams amongst cohort-11 which will accomplish the cohort-11 learning and move into the LEAD global network.

2. Structure and outputs

The session is structured with 3 modules to achieve the objectives stated above:

The outputs of this session include:

Ø Working teams that will run throughout the cohort-11 process
Ø
Associate project proposals
Ø
Understanding of LEAD and LEAD approach

3. Session requirement

The training starts on the 8th and ends on 12th January. 90% of attendance on time is required and will be used as a performance indicator. Participation is also required as this is the only way to achieve the effective learning in LEAD. The active participation in the every training module from associates is also appreciated so that the session can be successful, interactive and productive. Based on the rules of LEAD program, those who are less than 90% of training time will lose the opportunity to continue LEAD program no matter what excuses they have.
