LEAD Training for Cohort 10 -- the 3^rd National Session
(Beijing, 8 -- 13 Sept., 2003)

1. Objectives

By now, the Associates have been exposed to different perspectives of sustainable development - demography, ecology, economics, energy, environment science and systems approach. This session will continue to facilitate the accomplishment of LEAD learning objectives - vision development and skill building with varieties of exercises going throughout the process. The session will pick “Water, a Common Goods” and “Megacities and Rural Development” as the themes, around which the learning is conducted. It is designed to for Associates:

To have a better understanding of sustainable development in disciplinary perspectives, and to transcend the conventional disciplinary boundaries.
To build the skills of systems thinking and cross culture as the integrated approaches to complex sustainable development issues.
Taking “water, a common goods” as a theme, to understand the water resource management mechanism practiced in China and explore the institutional innovation for sustainable water resource use.
Taking “megacities and rural development” as a theme, to assess the impacts of urbanization to rural development, and to identify the logic relationship between them.

2. Session structure & output

The session has five modules as inputs to vision development and skill building:

3. Methodology

The workshop will take the interactive and participatory approach. Working groups is a basic format of participation, complemented by presentation in plenary. Role-play games will be used to further encourage the participation and facilitate the understanding process.
